About Okinawa te Karate in Christchurch, NZ
We teach traditional Okinawa Te Karate at our dojo located in Christchurch, NZ. Our leading instructor is Sensei John Flavel who is rated the undisputed leading authority on the Okinawa-Te karate organisation system and in 1995 John was appointed New Zealands National Chief Instructor by the systems Grand Master Shihan Doversola. Karate means 'empty hands' and implies self-defence without weapons and is suitable for all age groups to learn.
Karate does not only teach self-defence but also teaches discipline, self respect, respect for others and a positive attitude. The ultimate goal of karate should be the attainment of a developed moral character built through hard and diligent training.
Okinawa-te as practiced by us adheres more to the older modes of Okinawa-te. The influence of Chinese arts is clearly evident in many of our kata. The emphasis on less linear modes is also more evident in Okinawa-te than in other systems of Karate.
Because of this non linear movement and ability to defend and attack from any angle Okinawa te is regarded by many to be one of the most versitile systems in the world. We welcome all people of all ages who are willing to learn and give it a go. The unique soft yet hard aspect means it is a suitable for people of all levels, whether wanting Tai Chi style martial arts or strong hard Japanese styles.
We encourage you to either participate(reccommended) or observe one of our classes. So come on down to the Christchurch karate dojo at 233 Breezes Road, Aranui, Christchurch. Click here to find out more.
